I posted the thrilling* conclusion to the Empyrea series last week, so check that out below if you are so inclined.

 

The piece I selected as the final subject was called AthanorLower, which was a companion piece to – can you guess? – AthanorUpper!  It’s fun to be given these little mini-assignments inside of a world that let the pieces work together in new ways.  In this case, the pieces had to contrast but live in the same universe.  The denizens of these levels were trying to stop the upper level from collapsing onto the lower level, so I used some literality in coming up with the themes:  I used descending chromatic notes to musically describe the danger of the upper levels descending into destruction.

 

Can anyone think of another example of this literality in theme writing?
